Hardware Stuff

I'm a bit of a hardware Luddite me. I never throw out ageing machines, preferring to donate them to unsuspecting recipients, and upgrading only when there's dire need. I've only got two machines running at home at the moment. One a recently built Core2DuoNew Page machine running Windows XP for general use (ie playing Flight Simulator) and the other an AMD Athlon XP/1500 powered box (I user the term powered loosely there). There's also the rusting carcass of an archaic Celeron 366 machine dual-booted to run Ubuntu Linux and Windows 2000.

I did have a pair of HP/Apollo Unix workstations which I gave away to an able, enterprising and energetic youngster at work. They cost the place I was working for at the time about $60,000 and I bought them after they'd been written off for about $1000.

I havent actually bought any h/w over the web but there are a couple of local suppliers who have a web presence. Here's some kiwi vendors:

I'd been looking at KVM Switches recently so I could use a single Keyboard, Monitor, Mouse combo with both machines at home. Ended up buying a Dick Smiths badged unit from their shop in Hamilton. Here's some guff I was reading about at the time:
