O'Reilly Open Source Convention - 2002

In 2002 I was fortunate to be able to attend the O'Reilly Open Source Convention held from 22-26 of July in San Diego California. The convention proper was 3-days of sessions in various technical streams, preceeded by two days of _hands-on_ tutorials.

Tutorials

As part of the registration process I had to select the tutorials I plan to attend. There were plenty of double-ups where there were multiple concurrent tutorials that would have been useful. Here's the list I've registered for...

  1. AxKit Tutorial - Axkit is an XML Web Publishing framework built on top of Apache and mod_perl. The focus of this tutorial will be on separation of concerns - the splitting of content, presentation, logic and site management.
  2. Regular Expression Mastery - The first section will explore the algorithm that perl uses internally to do regex matching. In the second section, we'll apply our knowledge of the internals, examining at several common disasters, a few practical parsing applications, and some new features.
  3. Linux Systems Administration - The following areas will be covered with a special emphasis on security: Installation Features, Disk Partitioning, Software RAID Networking, User Accounts and Management, Services, Security: TCP Wrappers, SSH, Packet Filtering, New Developments (Journaling Filesystems, VPN, etc.)
  4. Exchanging Objects and Messages with SOAP - This talk will discuss the myths and realities of "web services.". We'll show some examples and demonstrate separate systems written in separate languages, Perl and Java, exchanging messages and objects as part of a larger application. We'll also look at design issues to consider to make an application "web services ready"

Keynotes

There were a bunch of parallel keynotes on each of the three convention proper days, the following looked the most interesting..

  • The Free Software Movement - Richard Stallman
Free Software Foundation President RMS discusses the purpose, goals, philosophy, methods, status, and future prospects of the GNU operating system
  • Hacking the Genome: Open Source in Bioinformatics - Ewan Birney
In this talk Birney presents the contributions of open source to this crucial research activity and a wish list for Perl, Python and Java for the future.
  • Challenges of Open Source in Visual Effects - Milton Ngan
_The IT Director for Weta Digital, Peter Jackson's company doing the digital effects for the Lord of the Rings movies, is keynoting at the O'Reilly Open Source Convention. They use a ton of Linux and Perl._
